Musical Fidelity M6X 350.11 : Multichannel Power Amplifier
Musical Fidelity M6x 250.11 is the elevan channel power amplifier in their line up of AV power amplifiers, which also includes five and seven channel versions. The 250 indicates 250W per channel (400W peak) to the 3 main channels (L,C,R) and 150w per channel (250w peak) to the remaining 8 channels.
Class AB output stages are used for each module. This gives class A performance with class B efficiency. To provide adequate current the units use massive toroidal transformers along with hi-grade capacitors. The case is robustly made of a strong aluminium extrusion. Finally, balanced XLR inputs are available as well as standard RCA connectors.
Multi Channel Power
Surround sound entered the home in the 1980’s after being in cinemas since 1940. This simple three speaker setup became todays multi-channel object based system. For example Dolby Atmos or DTS. To get the full 3D object based system with height channels you need the M6 250.11, 11 channel amplifier and a suitable Pre-amplifier/AV processor.
High Quality Connections
The M6X 250.11 features top quality gold plated, balanced XLR inputs. Balanced inputs improve dynamics, create less noise and provide a better signal to noise ratio. However, you can still use the conventional RCA inputs, which are gold also plated. Additionally, each amplifier module has a loop through option, so that you can connect the same source to multiple modules. The speaker outputs are also gold plated and isolated. They can take, spade connectors, bare wire or 4mm plugs. Finally you can turn the unit on or off with the trigger input.
High Output Power Modules
Each of the 11 channels on the M6x 250.11 is class AB for a clean and natural sound. The output power on the front three channels is 250 Watts and to other channels 150 Watts (both rated into 8 ohms). Such a high output needs a beefy power supply. The M6 range uses large toroidal transformers to provide enough current for good dynamic range and to maintain transients. Transients are bursts of sudden current demand such as with a loud explosion. With all that power efficient heatsinking is needed and the M6 series uses innovative methods, so that no noisy cooling fans are needed.
