Nu Prime AMG HPA : Headphone Amp
The AMG series front panel embodies its spirit. It is milled from a 15mm harden aerospace aluminum alloy using a four-axis CNC machine with a diamond cutter through a 48 steps process. Design elements such as the 3D “floating” logo, the curved surface around the front panel switch, and diamond-cut edge bring the quality of ultra-high-end audio products to the affordable range of the AMG series.

The AMG HPA is the world’s first headphone amplifier that utilizes the 1MΩ input impedance design, first used in our flagship EVO ONE amplifiers, and now in the AMG series. Adhering to the philosophy of the AMG series, the intention is to deliver the most transparent and detailed signal from the source to the rest of the audio chain. With the intimate listening experience that headphones provide, the stark difference in the level of performance easily demonstrates the advantage of the AMG 1MΩ design.
Technical Highlights
The input stage utilizes Ultra-High Bandwidth (communications applications), Low-Noise JFET for the 1MΩ input impedance circuitry. Amplification circuitry uses a Single-Ended, Non-Negative Feedback Class A module for a wide frequency bandwidth and rich second order harmonics.
Fully balanced amplification that consists of independent circuitries for input, volume, amplification and power output stages. The volume control uses two MUSES72320 to achieve a fully balanced 100 levels (0-99) of volume adjustments. This is the best volume control we’ve put into a product and likely the best for any headphone amplifier.
A specially customized R-Core transformer and 26000uF of filtering capacitors used in the power supply ensures that the circuitries are provided with fast and stable power.
Besides having the headphone outputs, the AMG HPA also has 2 sets (XLR and RCA) of analogue outputs where it could be used as a reference level pre-amp with 1MΩ inputs.

Functionality
It is usually an analog device that requires a complete stereo power amplifier or two mono power amplifiers. The role of the preamplifier is to receive an analog or digital audio signal from a source such as a turntable, CD player, computer, TV, stream player and transfer it to the power amplifiers to amplify it and drive the loudspeakers with it.
It is also worth recalling that each integrated amplifier has a built-in preamplifier and power amplifiers, but the most sophisticated stereo systems usually have these functions separated into separate devices. This is due to the fact that the preamplifier and power amplifier have completely different power line requirements, which are in conflict with each other. Additionally, the operation of power amplifiers operating on a signal with a power of several or several dozen watts usually disrupts the work of a preamplifier operating on a very weak signal, counted in millivolts. After all, it is an additional place where each user can have an additional influence on the sound of their system by selecting the preamplifier and power amplifier themselves.
That is why most audiophiles consider it appropriate to use the so-called « split system » and the temptation to pair devices from different manufacturers with each other is strong, because you can get a very unique, original sound.
Good quality preamplifiers are usually distinguished by very precise sound intensity control, which is a disadvantage of even more expensive amplifiers and has a significant impact on the perception of stereo.
